What had I hoped for? To walk a path is such a solitary activity. All my unspoken words and thought, love and anger, my envy and frustration are contained in the movement through space. It is a place to dream.

Ainslie Ross

painting

I produce elegant detailed ink drawings, concentrating on the detail and beauty found in nature.

Alison Dyson

ink drawing

I have been drawing, painting, sewing and making since my earliest memories. Brought up in the Herefordshire countryside, I moved to Bristol to study Illustration (BA Hons) at Bower Ashton, UWE, where I now work in the Fashion & Textiles Department.
Continually inspired by glorious nature, I love to sketch and paint in fields, gardens and on beaches. Drawn to colour and texture, I enjoy the physical process and layered qualities of oil painting. Using brush, knife and improvised tools, this is a happy way for me to capture the vibrant pattern of my surroundings.

I have been producing watercolour paintings for quite a while now, and I thought it might be a good idea to give some of these an airing in public once again. I tend to paint what interests me at any given time. The subjects range from very old photographs, to wildlife and to anything else that pops into my head. I do take occasional commissions but on the whole the subjects are based on dreams and flights of fancy. I hope that you enjoy what you see.

Catherine Hall

I have been painting in this area for 15 years, my work is landscape based and has taken on a semi abstract personal interpretation, encapsulating feelings of mystery and moving through while walking. Using oil or acrylic paint on canvas or panel, texture, colour and composition, making a satisfying painting take precedence over portraying a view. Collage has also been a particular interest, sometimes primarily, at other times being incidental in the development of the work.

Christine Dack

painting

Animaps: images discovered while exploring the countryside with my feet. I was alerted by Bristol conceptual artist Richard Long to the possibility of using walking as a way of understanding the countryside, but the images I have found owe more to Taoism and more especially, Tibetan Buddhism. Through Thornbury Wayfinders I am seeking new ways of interacting with the countryside and involving others in the process.

Christopher Bloor

drawing

My work concentrates on my local landscape. The landmarks, fields, and fauna are all aspects that informs my paintings.
I work by sketching outside on the spot. The sketch will then be sized up and painted in my studio.
My painting process is very sketchy to start with then I slowly build layers of acrylic paint onto water colour paper or canvas to create fine detail.
Colour is also very important to me. To give a realistic interpretation of a view but an enhanced colour and contrast to make my work sing!

Claire Failes

painting

Created vessels have dialogue with each other, their surroundings and those who interact both visually and by touch. The intangible essence, presence or ‘being-with’, enables interaction with others, our world, underpinning values within making. This precious essence facilitates acceptance, empathy, dialogue, potential for our well-being, that of others, and can facilitate collaboration.
Clays are similar yet individual and unique. During making, materiality of clay, inherited tacit knowledge, incorporating wood firing, local brick, wild clays and ash reinforces connections. Timeless interaction and understanding of varied societies and cultures, also mirror aspects within Clares previous midwifery career, providing wholeness to her work.

Clare Stephens

Frances specialises in painting and various forms of printmaking including collagraph, monotype and lino printing.
Her work is inspired by a love of nature and being outdoors. Whether it's the sea crashing against the Cornish coastline or a frosted over oak leaf in her local fields, these encounters form the ideas behind her semi-abstract paintings and intricate prints.

Frances Daws

I am a self-taught hobbyist furniture maker who enjoys designing and making small pieces of furniture from wood. In the early years most of my work was influenced by The Arts and Crafts movement. Currently the Art Deco era is my inspiration, using mainly rippled sycamore and black walnut. I have recently made a range of occasional tables, each piece individually designed and hand crafted by myself in my own workshop. The contrasting spline detail a recurring theme. I also create smaller objects such as candleholders and vases often utilising offcuts from my tables.

I paint in acrylic and take my inspiration from the British countryside. My subjects span flora, fauna and landscape. My chance to paint came when moving back to this area in 2015.
My inspiration is the beauty of the landscape and especially trees although my work is by no means photographic.

My work explores fragility, transformation, and the organic interplay of textures through ceramics and mixed-media processes. I use various media to produce landscapes and abstracts, and also collages.

Pauline Darley

I’ve always drawn and painted but I spent a lifetime doing really interesting things in radio and television, that left me little time to pick up my brushes. I neglected it too long but for the last six years I've been trying to catch up. I paint in oils, mostly landscapes and portraits. Kind of realistic but occasionally abstract. Bit like me really.

Richard Leslie Lewis

"Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever… It remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything." Aaron Siskind.

My grandfather gave me my first camera when I was 8 years old. Over the following decades I've been fortunate in being able to capture visual stories, both as a keen amateur and a working professional, in film and digital. Shooting landscape, documentary, portrait and architectural photography, and recording those details which we might otherwise forget, it is a privilege to be able to share these visual memories.

Steve Godsell

photography

After a working life spent in the creative industries I have returned to my first love of painting. I am always experimenting with different mediums and techniques, producing a diverse range of styles from bold graphic style flower portraits, loose flowing abstracts to dramatic imagined worlds. Always treading a fine line between chaos and calm!
