Aggs Richards, a self-taught artist, creates atmospheric artwork that captures the beauty of nature and seasons. Dive into a journey through abstract floral paintings and textured creations.

Aggs Richards

painting

My acrylic paintings explore identity, vulnerability, and human connection through expressive portraiture and layered mark-making. I work intuitively, using acrylics for their versatility and immediacy, allowing emotion and atmosphere to build through colour, texture, and line. Being disabled has shaped both my pace and perspective, encouraging a sensitive, honest approach to each piece. My work often focuses on subtle expression — a gaze, a gesture, a moment of stillness — inviting viewers to slow down, reflect, and connect.

Aimee Winter-Tuck

painting

The hand sees in a half light, shaped forms appear in pigment and line, an attempt to re-enchant a familiar and non-bescript landscape.

Ainslie Ross

painting

I have been drawing, painting, sewing and making since my earliest memories. Brought up in the Herefordshire countryside, I moved to Bristol to study Illustration (BA Hons) at UWE Bower Ashton, where I now work in the Fashion and Textiles Department. I love to sketch and paint in fields, gardens and on the coast. Drawn to colour and texture, I enjoy the physical process and layered qualities of oil painting. Using brush, knife and improvised tools, this is a happy way for me to capture the vibrant patterns of nature.

Alison Stephenson

painting

I am primarily a painter who has recently started making painted sculptures. I enjoy working with colour and form and enjoy the surprise and magic that happens when a narrative emerges on the canvas or surface. My work is intuitive and semi abstract and the scenes and themes that emerge can be personal fragile and dark themed

Amanda Gee Griffiths

painting & sculpture

I mainly paint in acrylics and I am drawn to scenes of water and reflections I am also inspired by colour.

Annie Harrison

Beth first picked up pencils in 2020 becoming hooked into the magic of drawing. A member of the UK Colour Pencil Society and Association of Animal Artists, Beth continues to develop her own style through her Pet Portraits. Beth runs local workshops to “Get Started in Colour Pencil” and combines drawing with accreditation as a meditation teacher in mindful art sessions. Central to Beth’s art are the animals, in particular dogs & birds. She finds something spiritual studying their unique character and capturing their soul onto paper (ably supervised by her own pup Leicester!).

Although I have painted outside landscapes in oil in many places, my work now mostly encompasses Gloucestershire. It has developed from local sketches to a more personal and partly abstract interpretation, colour, composition and emotion being powerful drivers. I have also experimented with work on paper, often concerned with beach and shoreline, collaged elements with added acrylic being the main medium.

Christine Dack

painting

I have been a member of Thornbury Art Club for 45 years. I am a hobby artist covering sculpture and various types of art mediums. I am inspired by visual stimulation including the written word. My favourite style of art is Collage/montage making. I have widely exhibited through my club and also as a Friend of the RWA. I have delighted members of the public with my amusing, original art work.

Christine Sherriff

mixed media

I work almost exclusively in golden acrylic paint. Sometimes working on a very flat watercolour paper or more recently using canvases. Living in an area of outstanding natural beauty my surroundings inform my work. I’m inspired by landscapes and woodlands. The seasons and changes in weather alter the colours and perspective giving a further fascination to my compositions. I draw on the spot for each painting. The drawings will be used and traced from a light box or from a tracer projector onto canvas. Photographs, colour notes are taken at the same time as the drawings are made for secondary reference.

Claire Failes

painting

Clare Stephens creates vessels, interacting with others, materials and objects, mirrored in curation. She appreciates clays materiality, and tacit knowledge from countless generations of ceramicists and potters. Enhanced by her use of varied clays, making and firing techniques, technical, material knowledge and form, pieces connect as part of timeless interactions with all societies and cultures. Constantly evolving or developing, allows openness to ideas, communication, while recognizing everyone’s humanity. Interacting with clay, mind and body are in unison, paralleling aspects within Clare’s previous midwifery career, explored during an MA in 2023, provides wholeness to her work.

Clare Stephens

ceramics

I am an artist with painting and drawing at the heart of my practice. Central to my work is the use of pure colour which I make from pigments. My work has always been about place, specific visited places in response to particular landscape features that have had a profound effect on me, mostly in tidal and coastal areas and so distinctly understood by drawing directly. I use drawing and painting as a visual language to express my most inner thoughts and emotions.

Clare Thatcher

painting

Craig has a full-time career within the public sector and his ‘day job’ is very different from the calming effects of painting. He is a self-taught Bristol based artist, drawing his inspirations from seasons spent traversing the coastal paths of the UK and occasionally, Europe. These experiences profoundly influence his work. I hope you enjoy this selection of original acrylic on canvas art, all beautifully framed to enhance their appeal.

Craig Davies

The Flying Pig Pottery on the edge of Thornbury, neighbouring the Leisure Centre, has easy access and parking and a big selection of ceramics made by many methods. Thrown and hand built bowls, vases, jugs, plates and mugs, coasters, pendants, fridge magnets, paper weights and fragrant candles. Also hand sculpted animals and models, and bleached coral sculptures (effects of global warming). For your kitchen, there are serving dishes and terracotta cookware. All inspired by nature and the magical properties of clay and glazing. I also make Raku and pit-fired pieces. You are welcome to view my studio, kilns, and pit-firing pit. Great fun for children.

Derek North

ceramics

I work mainly in acrylics, landscapes and seascapes, capturing the energy and atmosphere through colour mark making and texture.

Diane Harrison

painting

The beginning of my art journey last year has been wonderful. I am passionate about painting landscapes, seascapes and animals.

Elaine Romaeo

painting

I am a stained glass artist with a long, deep interest in the complex geometric frameworks found in Gothic cathedrals. I am fascinated to find the commonality of patterns used in sacred art throughout human history, seeking to apply these ideas through the use of light and line in my stained glass work. Whilst enjoying the meditative repetition of shape and the challenge it presents to me and my craft. Discovering that each pattern can be recreated in a multiplicity of ways means that a unique piece of art is created with each rendition.

Eleanor Lachab

I am a self taught hobbyist furniture maker who enjoys designing and making small pieces of furniture from wood. In the early years most of my work was influenced by The Arts and Craft movement. Currently the Art Deco era is my inspiration using mainly rippled sycamore and walnut. I have recently made a range of occasional tables, each individually designed and hand crafted by myself in my own workshop - the contrasting spline detail a recurring theme. I also offer a limited range of smaller items, made from "offcuts", maximising the use of this beautiful wood.

Geoffrey Doyle

George uses a wide range of local and reclaimed woods and likes to do things 'a little bit differently'. Exhibiting models at steam fairs (Cirencester, Welland and Chickerell) this year.

George King

I create hand-crafted silver and hand coloured aluminium jewellery. Also I work with copper and powdered enamel to produce unique pieces such as bowls, freestanding sculptural designs and hanging panels. My work explores the interplay of metal and colour and I am influenced by natural forms and the landscape.

Gillian Harkness

The inspiration for my work is from the natural environment, especially woodlands. The changing light, colours, shadows and the textures of the foliage lend themselves beautifully to Batik. The shape and textures found in woodlands are also the inspiration for my weaving.

Holly is an internationally-selling artist who captures memories, moments and emotions in magical seascapes, landscapes and florals. Vibrant colours and textures sweep across the canvas, adding mood and vibrancy. Each painting is filled with heart and spirit - a celebration of nature and all its healing powers. She graduated in Fine Art at the University of The West of England, winning the John Hulla Award from the School of Creative Arts and achieved a First Class Honours Degree. After graduating she became a qualified art teacher at Masters level. "I try to bring joy and clarity and to transport the viewer to a place of peace and mindfulness. My palette is generated by mood, embracing what is in my head and also what is in reality, often a dance between both."

Holly Dunham

painting

In my painting I like to experiment with different mediums to try to capture the essence of the natural world.

Jenny Dicker

Johannes Roux works with reclaimed and naturally fallen local wood to create one-off pieces that celebrate the inherent character and imperfections of the material. Guided by the forms found in nature, his work is also informed by the long tradition of vessel-making across human civilisations. Many of his pieces are turned on the lathe and then further developed through hand carving. Smaller offcuts are repurposed into distinctive items of jewellery, ensuring that every part of the material is valued and used.

Johannes Roux

I particularly like the medium of line wash watercolour. It allows me to work fast and capture the atmosphere of my subject. I always try to work in situ, which sometimes has it's challenges, particularly when a goat started to chew my sketchy book!

Jon Willcocks

painting

Birds are used as a means of exploring light, surface, and spatial tension within the picture plane. Working primarily in soft pastel, I combine linear drawing with broader tonal passages to build structure without fixing the subject too rigidly. The medium’s responsiveness supports both precision and revision, enabling repeated adjustment as the image develops. Colour choices are informed by direct observation and restrained palettes, avoiding decorative excess. By allowing traces of process to remain visible, the finished works reflect an analytical approach that values construction, observation, and the physical qualities of the medium.

Judith James

pastels

Judith is an artist based in Dursley, working from her garden studio where she develops her distinctive style as an impressionist painter. Inspired by the changing seasons and the surrounding countryside, her work reflects the atmosphere and rhythm of the local landscape. Recent paintings explore woodland scenes, incorporating gold and bronze leaf to capture shifting light, warmth and a sense of quiet joy found in the woods.

Judith Pemberton-Bennetts

painting

I enjoy abstract art combining the fluidity of watercolour and the precision of fine ink work.

Julie Jackson

painting & ink

I’m a Gloucestershire based artist, who has been creating for more than 40 years. My passion is creating landscapes with soft horizons and quiet colour, that allow you to look slowly, pause and rest your mind. I’m inspired by local landscapes and of course my own imagination, leading us on a journey of feeling the joy in the natural countryside around us. Some of my work is led by soft abstraction and some is more representative, but always focused on the space between earth and sky and the colours in between.

Karen Bleakley

Over the last few years I have found a passion for watercolours but do like to try other mediums. I am a self taught artist who lives in South Gloucestershire. My work has a whimsical side to it that will make you smile.

Kate Andrews

painting

I am a local visual artist experimenting with acrylics and focusing on detail and design. My work captures nature, incorporating small amphibians, insects and birds. With a background in teaching primary pupils art, crafts and observational drawing, I love learning from the Impressionists to develop my skills and try new ways to apply paint! Recently, my practice has shifted towards exploring new design with 3D elements. I have run a community workshop for a Ukrainian group, believing creativity is therapeutic and enriching. 'Sketch and Skulpt' course led by Shirley Sharp was extremely enjoyable and helped me to expand my skills.

Kathryn Symons

painting

I paint in acrylic and take my inspiration from the British countryside. My subjects span flora, fauna and landscape; sometimes I aim to capture places or subjects that have special meaning for me, or I may create entirely from my imagination. Liz Armstrong

ceramics

I am a relatively new artist and have recently joined Thornbury Art Society where I continue to improve my skills whilst having fun! I also attend workshops by local artists to increase my knowledge. I enjoy watercolour, acrylic, drawing, pen and wash and am dabbling with water based oils and pastels with a view to trying multimedia. There is such a huge range of materials to explore that every painting or drawing is an exciting challenge.

Liz Davies

painting

Liz studied art to A-level, then life took over. She started painting again in her late 60s. Her inspiration has always been trees in the landscape. Her style has evolved over time and her work has been described as "English landscape with a twist" also as "loose landscapes". The way she uses media means that initially the results are unpredictable - then follows the excitement of interpretation!!

Liz Spriggs

My name is Ludmila Snicareva and I create watercolors. Flowers are the primary subject of my art work. I admire them, I take pictures of them and I paint them tirelessly. Watercolour beautifully conveys the versatility of colour, the elegance and fragility of flowers. I started painting in my childhood and I study continuously as new materials and techniques emerge.

I am a mixed media artist based in Sharpness, and I am organising and curating an exhibition entitled 'overLOOKed' in collaboration with the Canal & River Trust.
Seven local artists have been invited to create artwork inspired by the Sharpness Dock area to celebrate the overlooked beauty and interest of the docks and surrounding environment and encourage viewers to look more closely and think differently about the area.
The exhibition will include photography, ceramics, mixed media sculpture and oil painting, alongside a display by the Canal & Rivers Trust. The venue overlooks Sharpness docks, the River Severn and canal.

Lynda Knott

I work with preloved fabrics and am inspired by the hotchpotch nature of coastal villages and the ever changing mood of the sea. I work with an ethos of sustainability and aim to show the beauty of preloved fabrics, giving them a second life and a story to tell. Each piece has a distinctive style and is lovingly hand crafted.

Mair Gapper

I paint bespoke murals large or small, indoors or out. I can suggest ideas based on favourite things or views. I use acryllics so they can be easily changed if necessary at a later date. Murals are great for brightening up small rooms or blank walls. Staircases are popular. Please contact me for more information.

Mandy Cottle

painting

Through the use of imagery and materials, by combining the 'natural' and organic with the manufactured, I struggle to resolve the dichotomy between nature and humankind, to marry the two – to create a harmonious, and symbiotic relationship.' In my most recent work I have simplified the imagery and am now more concerned with purely organic forms, working on the symbolic imagery of the very basics of life - the cycle of fertility, procreation, ingestion, excretion.

Mark Clifford

mixed media sculpture

I'm an intuitive painter from the Cotswolds. I work predominantly in oil and watercolours. Initially self-taught, I have followed my love of art from a young age and have enjoyed honing my skills by working alongside other artists in my community. I am inspired by colour and light, working in an impressionistic style where I strive to capture the world around me through vibrant and bold brush strokes. Especially the glamour and beauty of flowers and atmosphere of our local landscapes. I am also a commission based artist and love working with clients to achieve bespoke pieces. Please contact me if you are interested in a commission for a special occasion or gift.

‘We are the flower’ Flowers symbolise human identity and strength. Dripping represents emotional pain, while layers reflect hidden experiences, memories, and emotional struggles concealed beneath the surface to safeguard our inner selves. Bright, bold colours highlight the difference between outward happiness and the concealed inner struggle.

I am a professional full-time artist with formal training in the UK, having studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London and completing a diploma at Spike Island, Bristol. My practice centres on semi-abstract landscape painting, where observation, memory, and atmosphere are distilled into expressive colour, rhythm, and mark-making. Alongside this, I am known for works inspired by Henley Royal Regatta, capturing the energy, tradition, and movement of rowing through dynamic composition. My work balances structure and spontaneity, inviting viewers to experience familiar places and events in a fresh, emotional way, with strong sense of place and time.

Nicholas Quirke

painting

My love of the natural world takes me through local woodlands, and along the River Frome and sometimes further afield. It then brings me great joy to capture the beauty I have seen in the free flowing media of watercolour, alcohol ink and fused glass. I donate profits to The Woodland Trust.

Nicky Stone

painting and glass

I am inspired by the world around us; the light, shadows, and medley of colour and texture that defines our landscape and animal kingdom. I also get emotive with how we humans interact with the planet and each other. I celebrate happiness, beauty, and quirkiness. I also illustrate the darker side; a deeper look at what vexes our sense of wellbeing. I interpret with colour and texture, often experimental, and frequently mix media and styles. Predominantly a painter, I have always enjoyed playing with perspective. Recently I have started moving from 2D to 3D.

Nicola Latham
